Once World War II ended, Germany was split among the remaining allies, into four parts. The four countries that each got a piece were Great Britain, Soviet Union, America and France. Each "superior" country got to decide the government of their zone and how they would run things there. Along with the entire country being split, their main city of Berlin was split. It ended up being where nearly all of West Germany was capitalist because the three sections that Great Britain, America and France all owned had a capitalist government and economy and West Germany was that of a communist nation similar to the Soviet Union. And Berlin was no exception. It was ultimately split into two parts; a capitalist and a communist part. There was a barbed wire wall built between West Berlin and East Berlin, but the wall made the capitalist part of Germany isolated.
"This wall symbolized socialism and communism and restricted people's freedom in East Germany...basically made East Germany a prison camp...People were shot for trying to climb the wall."-Joseph Letizia. And this wall wasn't removed after the cold war ended, in fact it wasn't in pieces on the ground until November 9, 1989 that this wall finally came crashing down. People had wanted the wall down for a long time, but once it fell, it was a happiness and relief to those who were restricted or worried by the wall. The wall falling meant freedom. And you can thank the newly elected president Ronald Reagan for this. Reagan had a big part to do with the wall coming down and many people to this day appreciate all the work he did for those falling to communism.
